What happened
While traveling from Uruapan toward Lázaro Cárdenas, a twin engine airplane encountered difficult weather conditions during its flight. While cruising through the area, the aircraft collided with the side of a mountain located approximately 15 km from Arteaga within the Sierra Madre Mountain Range.
The impact caused the airframe to break apart upon hitting the terrain. There were no survivors among the 20 fatalities recorded following the crash.
Findings
Investigations into the accident concluded that the crash was a result of controlled flight into terrain. The aircraft was operating at an altitude that was too low for the surrounding topography, though the specific reason for this insufficient height remained undetermined.
