What happened

During a flight from Elmendorf to Ellington AFB, Texas, a C-119 departed from Whitehorse, following closely behind another aircraft of the same type. The mission was part of a return journey following participation in the 'King Crab II' joint military exercises held on Kodiak Island.

As the aircraft began its initial climb, an unforeseen emergency occurred, necessitating that five crew members abandon the plane via parachute. Shortly after the crew members exited the aircraft, the C-119 entered a steep dive and struck the ground approximately 17 miles south of Whitehorse.
