Engine failure leads to fatal crash during initial climb

2 fatalities • Sewart AFB (Smyrna), United States of America • Takeoff (climb)

An engine failure during the takeoff climb resulted in a fatal accident, causing the aircraft to crash near the airfield and resulting in two fatalities.

What happened

During the initial climb phase following takeoff, the aircraft experienced a loss of power due to an engine failure. As the malfunction occurred, the aircraft became uncontrollable. In an attempt to escape the failing plane, all 37 paratroopers on board successfully exited the aircraft. Additionally, three of the five crew members managed to abandon the flight.

Despite the successful evacuation of the passengers and most of the crew, the aircraft continued its uncontrolled descent. The plane eventually impacted a field situated approximately five miles northeast of the airfield. The accident resulted in two fatalities, consisting of both pilots on board.

Findings

Official investigations concluded that the primary factor leading to the loss of control was an engine failure occurring shortly after takeoff.

Probable cause

The aircraft suffered an engine failure during the climb phase immediately following takeoff.
