What happened
During an agricultural mission involving the distribution of fertilizer, a Fletcher was conducting its thirteenth sowing flight of the morning. The aircraft was operating near a field when it began its typical pattern of runs. An observer nearby noted that the initial northerly pass appeared to start further north than previous maneuvers and featured a steeper climb than usual during the subsequent right-hand reversal turn.
Following this maneuver, the aircraft entered a sharp descent and disappeared behind local terrain. A second witness reported hearing the aircraft fly directly over a residence, followed by the engine noise cutting out and the sound of an impact. Upon reaching the site shortly after, responders found the wreckage resting upright on its belly without any fire. The pilot was discovered unconscious in his seat with severe facial and head injuries; he succumbed to these wounds the following day. The total number of 1 fatality was recorded.
Physical evidence at the scene indicated that the aircraft struck a power pole located on the paddock boundary while in a right bank. This impact caused the plane to pivot into a right yaw and a nose-down attitude before hitting the ground.
Findings
Investigation of the wreckage showed no signs of structural or engine failure leading up to the event. The cessation of engine noise was attributed to the pilot reducing power in an attempt to avoid the crash. Environmental conditions at the time were characterized by cloudy skies, normal visibility, and nearly calm winds.
