What happened
During a flight operating between Dar es-Salaam and Addis Ababa, the aircraft was navigating at cruising altitude when it encountered adverse wind conditions. These winds caused the plane to drift from its intended flight path. During the transit, the left engine experienced a failure.
In response to the loss of power, the crew initiated a descent to a lower altitude. The flight crew attempted to execute an emergency landing within a plantation situated in the Hareto region. As the aircraft made contact with the ground, it hit various obstacles, resulting in the left wing being partially severed.
Despite the impact and the significant damage to the airframe, all 35 occupants managed to evacuate the aircraft without sustaining any injuries. The aircraft was subsequently determined to be a total loss.
Findings
- The aircraft deviated from its planned trajectory due to unfavorable winds.
- A failure of the left engine necessitated the emergency descent and landing attempt.
