What happened
During a cargo operation traveling from Parkes to Orange, New South Wales, a single-engine aircraft experienced a loss of control while on final approach. The aircraft descended below the required altitude and struck the roof of a metal hangar situated close to the runway threshold. Following this initial impact, the aircraft entered a stall and made contact with the runway surface, causing the nose landing gear to be detached from the airframe.
After the impact with the runway, the aircraft continued to travel out of control, eventually departing the paved surface and colliding with a separate metal hangar that was under construction. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. The pilot sustained injuries during the sequence of events.
Findings
- The aircraft was operating at an insufficient altitude during the final approach phase.
- The collision with the first hangar roof preceded the stall and subsequent runway impact.
