Grumman AA-5 excursion at Wickenby Airfield

Casualties unknown • Wickenby Airfield, Lincolnshire, GB

A private flight involving a Grumman AA-5 ended in an aircraft excursion and wingtip strike during a landing attempt at Wickenby Airfield.

What happened

On 8 April 2001, a Grumman AA-5, registration G-BBDL, was performing a private flight at Wickenby Airfield, Lincolnshire. During the landing phase on the paved Runway 34, the pilot conducted an approach at approximately 80 mph with full flaps selected. As the aircraft descended to roughly 20 feet above the ground, it experienced an excessive sink rate.

The resulting touchdown was heavy, causing the aircraft to bounce. In an attempt to execute a go-around, the pilot applied full power. During this maneuver, the aircraft underwent a series of lateral oscillations, rolling first to the left and then to the right as the pilot used aileron and rudder inputs to maintain control. A subsequent roll to the left caused the left wingtip to strike the runway surface. The aircraft then veered off the paved area, completed a 180-degree turn, and came to a stop in a nose-down position. The three occupants, all wearing appropriate safety restraints, were able to exit the aircraft via the standard exits. While the pilot was unhurt, one passenger sustained minor injuries.

The investigation

Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the landing and the subsequent loss of control. The pilot noted that the approach speed appeared correct but suggested that the combination of a relatively flat approach and a sudden decrease in wind speed may have contributed to the high sink rate. Additionally, the pilot reported hearing the stall warning buzzer as the aircraft made contact with the runway.

Probable cause

The aircraft experienced a heavy landing and bounce following an excessive sink rate, leading to an unsuccessful go-around attempt and a subsequent wingtip strike.
