What happened
On 25 January 2018, a Gulfstream 200 bearing registration 5N-BTF, operated by Nestoil Plc, was performing a charter flight from Lagos to Abuja. The flight was conducted under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) with a total of seven people on board, including four passengers and three crew members.
During the approach to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, the aircraft was cleared for an ILS approach to Runway 22. Upon touchdown at approximately 15:18 h, the aircraft landed slightly to the left of the runway centerline. As the crew attempted to maintain control and steer the aircraft back to the center, the plane began to oscillate between the left and right sides of the runway.
As braking was applied, the lateral oscillations increased in magnitude. The aircraft followed an S-shaped path down the runway. During the final maneuvers, the right main landing gear strut separated from its attachment point after the right wheel entered the grass area on the right shoulder. The aircraft eventually came to a halt partially on the runway. There were zero injuries among the passengers and crew.
Findings
Post-incident inspections of the runway surface revealed skid marks consistent with the aircraft traveling in a continuous S-pattern with increasing amplitude. The investigation noted that the aircraft exited the runway surface on its right side, leading to the structural failure of the right main landing gear strut.
