What happened
On the evening of the incident, a charter flight, identified as IB500, departed from Abuja-Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport destined for Ibadan. The aircraft was carrying a total of ten people, consisting of seven passengers and three crew members. During the approach to runway 22, the flight crew received clearance to land at 2013LT.
As the aircraft was on short final, it struck the initial row of approach lights. The landing gear made contact with the ground approximately 220 metres before the runway threshold, specifically hitting the right main landing gear first, followed by the left main and nose landing gears. The aircraft's path through the approach lights involved a total of six distinct impact points.
After the initial contact with the ground in the grass verge, the aircraft moved toward the paved surface of the runway but drifted right of the centerline. The aircraft crossed the right shoulder of runway 22 and traveled through the grass for roughly 184 metres before coming to a halt, where it was partially obstructed by vegetation. During the sequence, the nose landing gear collapsed and the number one tyre deflated. Despite the impact, all 10 occupants were able to disembark from the aircraft without injury.
Findings
Preliminary observations indicate that the aircraft impacted the approach lighting system prior to touchdown, which likely contributed to the subsequent loss of directional control and the excursion into the grass verge.
