What happened
While operating at Mesa-Falcon Field Airport, the crew of an aircraft attempted to abort a takeoff roll on runway 22L. The maneuver was initiated after the plane had traveled approximately 3,400 feet and reached a speed of 133 knots. Despite the application of emergency braking, the aircraft could not stop before the end of the runway.
Following the overrun, the aircraft breached the airport perimeter fence and entered North Greenfield Road, where it struck a moving automobile. The impact and subsequent sequence of events caused the aircraft to come to a stop against several trees, at which point a fire broke out. The incident resulted in five fatalities among the aircraft occupants, including both pilots and two passengers, while one passenger was successfully rescued from the wreckage. The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision also lost their life.
Findings
At the time of the accident, weather conditions were reported as good. The primary factor in the collision was the inability to stop the aircraft within the remaining runway distance following the decision to abort the takeoff.
