What happened
On July 24, 2009, an Ilyther-62M aircraft, registration UP-I6208, was performing flight IRX1525 from Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport to Mashhad International Airport. The aircraft, which was being operated by DETA Airline under an ACMI contract for Aria Airline, landed on runway 13L at 18:05 local time. Following the landing, the aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently and exited the runway at the end of the threshold.
The aircraft traveled across a stopway and over a dirt road, eventually striking approach lights and a ditch containing an underground pipeline. The aircraft then collided with a brick perimeter wall at a distance of 820 meters from the runway threshold. The impact destroyed a 70-meter section of the fence and caused the aircraft to continue moving for another 160 meters before coming to a final stop on a nearby road. During the excursion, the right wing struck a power line, causing fuel leaks from the wing tanks.
The accident resulted in 16 fatalities, consisting of 11 crew members and 5 passengers. Additionally, 30 people were injured during the event. Emergency responders and airport safety units had to breach perimeter fencing and barbed wire to reach the wreckage, where they performed evacuations and managed a fire outside the fuselage.
Findings
Investigation of the site revealed that the aircraft's main gear tracks diverged toward the right side of the runway. Evidence of intensive braking was noted on the concrete, starting approximately 550 meters from the departure threshold. The wreckage path showed that the aircraft's structure disintegrated along its trajectory, with debris from the cockpit and passenger cabin found behind the perimeter wall. No evidence of an onboard fire was identified at the crash site.
