What happened
On October 30, 2021, at approximately 22:19 UTC, a Rans/Martin S9 Chaos AR, registration LV-X571, was performing aerobatic maneuvers near the Villa General Belgrano aerodrome in Córdoba, Argentina. The flight, which involved both individual and formation maneuvers alongside another aircraft of similar type, lasted approximately ten minutes. During the operation, the aircraft plummeted to the ground, impacting a street within a nearby residential development. The impact caused the total destruction of the aircraft and resulted in serious injuries to the pilot and two individuals on the ground.
The investigation
The investigation conducted by the JST examined the pilot's credentials, the aircraft's technical condition, and the fuel used during the flight. Investigators found that the pilot's certification was not in compliance with current regulations, as they lacked the required aerobatic exhibition endorsement. Additionally, the investigation looked into the legality of the fuel being utilized. National regulations prohibit the use of automotive gasoline for aviation purposes due to the high ethanol content, which can cause corrosion and engine issues.
Findings
- The pilot was performing maneuvers without the necessary aerobatic exhibition endorsement.
- The aircraft was operating at a low altitude, contrary to safety standards for aerobatic flights which require a minimum altitude of 450 meters above the highest obstacle.
- There were concerns regarding the use of unauthorized automotive fuel, which contains high levels of bioethanol that can lead to engine failure or fuel system degradation.
- The aircraft's engine, propeller, and airframe sustained catastrophic damage upon impact.
