What happened
On March 12, 2026, an Air Tractor AT502B, registration LV-ZZM, was involved in a takeoff accident near Villa del Totoral, Argentina. The aircraft, operated by a private owner for agricultural purposes, was performing a takeoff roll from a grass surface at Estancia El Cortijo. During the initial phase of the takeoff, the aircraft began a left turn and subsequently collided with an obstacle in an adjacent lot. The impact occurred at an estimated speed of 65 knots with a nose-up attitude and a slight bank.
The investigation
The preliminary investigation focused on the flight parameters and the aircraft's performance during the departure. Investigators examined the aircraft's weight and configuration, noting that the aircraft was operating in visual meteorological conditions with high visibility and calm winds. The wreckage was located less than 10 km from the aerodrome in a cultivated field. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's experience, noting significant flight hours in the aircraft type.
Findings
- The aircraft sustained substantial damage during the collision.
- There were no injuries to the pilot following the event.
- A primary contributing factor identified is that the Maximum Departure Mass (PMD) may have been exceeded during the takeoff attempt.
