What happened
On June 20, 2025, a SZD-48-3 Jantar Std. 3 glider with registration SP-3543 was operating at the Kruszyn airfield (EPWK). After being launched by a tow plane, the pilot attempted to locate thermal lift in the vicinity of the airfield but failed to establish contact with rising air. Consequently, the decision was made to land at the departure point.
During the final approach to Runway 26, the aircraft flew a low trajectory over the non-operational part of the airfield. The left wing struck a stake protruding from the ground located in front of the usable landing area. Despite the impact, the glider completed its roll-out on the airfield. The pilot sustained no injuries, but the aircraft was damaged.
The investigation
The Polish State Commission for Aviation Accident Investigation (PKBWL) reviewed the findings presented in the final report by the investigating entity. The Commission determined that the evidence provided was sufficient to conclude the investigation into this serious incident.
Findings
The primary cause of the incident was identified as the execution of a low approach over the non-operational section of the airfield. This maneuver was intended to facilitate an early touchdown and a short stop, but it resulted in the pilot failing to notice the obstacle on the approach path.
