What happened
On September 9, 2024, at approximately 15:30 local time, a Cessna 172N operated by a commercial pilot was on final approach to land at Aucó Aerodrome (SCIL) in Illapel, Coquimbo Region. During the traffic pattern, the aircraft's right wing struck an electrical power line. The impact caused damage to the aircraft, but the pilot remained uninjured. The location of the strike was recorded approximately 733 meters from the threshold of Runway 20.
The investigation
DGAC Chile investigators conducted a visual inspection and photographic documentation of the aircraft in a hangar at the aerodrome. They examined the right wing, noting damage to the leading edge consistent with impact against cables. Damage was also observed on the propeller cone and engine exhaust system. Investigators reviewed the pilot's credentials, confirming they held a valid Commercial Pilot License for single-engine land aircraft with instrument ratings. The aircraft's maintenance records indicated it was serviced by an authorized maintenance center. Fuel samples drained from both tanks showed no water or sediment and were consistent with 100LL aviation gasoline. Meteorological data confirmed conditions were suitable for visual flight rules at the time of the occurrence.
Findings
The primary causal factor identified was the impact of the right wing against electrical transmission lines during the approach phase. The investigation noted that the aircraft's weight and balance were within parameters, and there were no mechanical failures or fuel contamination issues contributing to the event. The pilot had no prior record of similar occurrences.
Safety action
The investigation is currently in the stage of preparing the final report. Once completed, DGAC Chile will determine the definitive cause and issue safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar operational hazards involving obstructions near aerodrome approaches.
