Aircraft strike by ground fire during takeoff from Katum Airfield

No fatalities • Tây Ninh, Vietnam • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft sustained damage from enemy fire shortly after departing Katum Airfield, leading to an emergency landing at Tây Ninh Airfield.

What happened

During the initial climb phase following departure from Katum Airfield, the aircraft was struck by ground-based enemy fire. The impact caused the number one engine to catch fire, prompting the pilot to initiate an emergency diversion toward Tây Ninh Airfield.

As the aircraft continued its flight, it was subsequently shot down, resulting in the propeller being feathered. Upon reaching the runway at Tây Ninh Airfield, the aircraft's left main landing gear remained in the retracted position during the landing sequence. The impact and subsequent arrival caused the left wing to ignite.

Although the aircraft came to a stop, it was ultimately consumed by fire on the ground. Despite the intensity of the post-landing fire, all five crew members managed to evacuate the wreckage and were reported as uninjured.

Findings

Investigations into the incident concluded that the primary factor leading to the emergency was the impact from enemy fire during the takeoff sequence.

Probable cause

The aircraft was disabled by incoming enemy fire during its departure from Katum Airfield.
