A cargo flight operating from San José-Juan Santamaría Airport departed at 14:00 local time, destined for Caracas. The four-engine airplane was transporting a payload of 16,330 kilograms of frozen meat, along with a crew of three and one passenger.

During the cruise phase of the flight over the Caribbean Sea, the aircraft disappeared. The last known position of the plane was approximately 65 km east of Bocas del Toro, Panama. Following the disappearance, search and rescue operations were launched to locate the missing vessel and its four occupants. However, after several days of searching, the mission was terminated because no wreckage or debris from the aircraft could be located.
