What happened
On July 16, 2017, an RA-2842G Berku was conducting a recreational flight near the village of Khuzhir on Olkhon Island. The pilot had previously arrived at the island from Ust-Ordynsky for leisure and had performed several short flights over the preceding two days. For this specific flight, the crew consisted of the pilot and three passengers, including two adults and one minor. There was no cargo or baggage on board.
Prior to departure, the pilot measured the fuel level using a dipstick, confirming 70 liters of fuel remained in the tanks. The flight departed from a landing site located approximately 5 km from Khuzhir at roughly 21:00 local time. The flight was intended to circle the village, maintaining altitudes between 100 and 150 meters with an indicated airspeed of 110 to 120 knots. After circling the settlement, the pilot initiated a turn back toward the landing site and descended to an altitude of 50 to 70 meters. While attempting to climb by performing a climbing turn (a "gorka" maneuver), the pilot reached an altitude of 200 meters and pushed the control column forward to level the aircraft. At that moment, the engine shut down spontaneously. The indicated airspeed had dropped to 80 knots. The pilot attempted to restart the engine using the manual fuel pump, but the engine failed to restart.
