On April 21, 2018, a KP-2 U SOVA, registered as RA-0125A, crashed in the area of the Kaybaly settlement within the Altai district of the Republic of Khakassia. The aircraft was operated by a private individual. The accident resulted in two fatalities and no other injuries were reported.
Investigations revealed that the aircraft registration RA-0125A was issued solely for registration purposes and did not constitute a type certificate from an authorized Russian Federation authority. Consequently, the aircraft lacked a valid certificate of airworthiness, and the pilot was not legally permitted to operate the aircraft under Russian law.
Maintenance records for the aircraft and its engine were found to be outdated, with the last entries dated March 11, 2013. There was no documentary evidence of recent maintenance work, and the aircraft operational logbook was missing. It appeared that maintenance was likely performed by the aircraft owner.
At the time of the incident, meteorological conditions at the Abakan airfield were reported as good, with visibility exceeding 10 km and no significant weather phenomena. However, the pilot did not request meteorological information from the Abakan AMSG prior to the flight.
