What happened
On August 31, 2019, at 15:35, a Tango-2 gyrocopter, registration RA-0674A, departed from a takeoff site located near the Fedoskino SNT in the Mytishchi district of the Moscow region. The aircraft was based in a private garage at the same location. The pilot did not submit a notice of airspace use to the Air Traffic Management Center, nor did they request meteorological information from the relevant authorities.
Between 15:36 and 15:53, the aircraft flew along the Moscow Canal, maintaining a varying altitude between 20 meters and 310 meters. At approximately 15:53, while flying at an altitude of about 36 meters above the water, the aircraft struck a lightning protection cable situated between supports No. 22 and No. 23 of the Khlebnikovo–Dolgoprudnaya 110 kV power line. Following the impact, the aircraft entered a rapid descent and struck the water surface. The accident resulted in 2 fatalities, involving both the pilot and the passenger. The aircraft sustained significant damage.
Findings
- The pilot failed to notify the Air Traffic Management Center regarding the intended flight.
- No meteorological information was obtained from the Air Traffic Management Center prior to departure.
- The collision occurred due to the aircraft striking a grounded lightning protection cable stretched along the power line.
