What happened
A single-engine airplane was performing a ferry flight from Nevers to Chambéry, intended for scheduled maintenance at the Air Alpes facilities. The aircraft was operated by a solo pilot who was the only person on board during the transit.
During the flight, meteorological conditions worsened significantly, characterized by low cloud ceilings and reduced visibility. Although the pilot was operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), the deteriorating environment prompted a decision to divert to a nearby aerodrome. During this period of navigation, the aircraft collided with the summit of a snow-covered mountain situated in the vicinity of Cluny.
The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. The pilot survived the event but sustained slight injuries.
Findings
Investigations into the accident determined that the primary factor was the pilot's choice to maintain VFR flight operations while entering instrument meteorological conditions (IMC).
