What happened
An aviation accident occurred at the Spa-La Sauvenière Aerodrome involving two separate aircraft during their arrival procedures. The first aircraft, a Pilatus PC-6, had departed from the airfield carrying a pilot and eight skydivers. After the passengers had successfully exited the aircraft, the pilot began a return flight to the base.
As the Pilatus PC-6 was performing its final approach to runway 05, it struck a Cessna 172, registered OO-SIW. The Cessna 172 was also in the process of approaching runway 05 and was carrying one pilot and three passengers at the time of the impact.
Following the mid-air contact, both aircraft lost control and descended near the airfield. The impact caused the Cessna 172 to sustain heavy damage, rendering it a total loss. The Pilatus PC-6 was destroyed following a fire that broke out after the crash. The collision resulted in one fatality, involving the pilot of the PC-6, and four injuries among the occupants of the Cessna.
Findings
The mid-air collision occurred while both aircraft were on final approach to the same runway.
