Mid-air collision involving skydiving aircraft near Cremona-Migliaro Airport

2 fatalities • Livrasco, Italy • Landing (descent or approach)

A single-engine aircraft crashed in a cornfield near Livrasco after colliding with a skydiver during its descent following a jump operation.

What happened

During the second skydiving mission of the day, a single-engine aircraft departed from Cremona-Migliaro Airport. The flight was carrying a pilot and eight passengers intended for skydiving. After reaching an altitude of 4,000 meters, all eight passengers exited the aircraft as planned. Following the jump, the pilot began a descent toward runway 11.

During this approach, the aircraft struck a skydiver who had recently exited the plane. The impact occurred against the vertical stabilizer and the left wing of the plane. This collision resulted in a significant portion of the left wing breaking away from the airframe. Consequently, the aircraft entered an uncontrolled descent and crashed into a cornfield situated approximately two kilometers north of the airport in Livrasco. The accident resulted in two fatalities, involving the pilot and the skydiver. The single-engine airplane was completely destroyed upon impact.

Findings

  • The aircraft suffered structural failure due to a collision with a skydiver during the descent phase of the flight.

Probable cause

The aircraft collided with a skydiver during its descent, leading to the loss of a wing section and subsequent uncontrolled flight.
