What happened
On 26 August 1998, a Piper PA-38-112, registration G-BNEK, was performing a private training flight at Mid-Wales Airport, Welshpool. During the takeoff roll on the hard surface of Runway 04, the aircraft experienced a sudden leftward veer after traveling approximately 100 metres.
Despite attempts to maintain the centerline, the student pilot could not counteract the swing, causing the aircraft to depart the runway and enter the adjacent wet grass. The pilot aborted the takeoff immediately; however, the momentum of the aircraft caused it to continue forward until it struck a fence post located at the airfield boundary. The incident resulted in minor damage to the exhaust system, and the pilot sustained no injuries.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. Investigators examined the environmental conditions at the time of the event, noting a variable surface wind of 5 to 10 knots. The investigation also considered the aircraft's movement across the runway surface and the subsequent impact with the boundary marker.
