Aircraft accident during aborted landing attempt

1 fatality • Danbury, United States of America • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft crashed into trees following an aborted landing attempt on a wet runway, resulting in one fatality and three serious injuries.

What happened

During an approach to runway 08 using the localizer, the pilot of the aircraft touched down on a wet runway that measured 4,422 feet in length. The touchdown occurred past the midpoint of the runway. Following the initial contact, the pilot attempted to abort the landing by applying increased power. Once the aircraft became airborne again, the landing gear was retracted.

During this sequence, the pilot requested that a passenger in the front right seat, who was not rated for such duties, adjust the flaps to a 20-degree setting. As the aircraft continued its flight path, the pilot observed trees directly ahead. Despite the application of full engine power, it became apparent that the aircraft would not clear the upcoming obstacles. In an effort to mitigate the severity of the collision, the pilot pulled back on the elevator control to prevent a nose-first impact with the trees.

Findings

Post-accident inspection revealed that the wing flaps were in the retracted position at the time of the crash. The accident resulted in one fatality and three serious injuries among the occupants.

Probable cause

The pilot attempted an aborted landing on a wet runway that resulted in an inability to clear obstacles ahead.
