Runway excursion involving SP-FLU in Canarana

No fatalities • Anápolis, Brazil • Landing (descent or approach)

A flight from Canarana to Anápolis ended in a runway excursion after the aircraft encountered crosswinds during landing, resulting in minor injuries.

What happened

Following a maintenance period in Alta Floresta, a flight was underway from Canarana to Anápolis. The aircraft, a SP-FLU, was carrying the pilot and two passengers at the time of the incident. As the aircraft touched down on runway 07, the pilot encountered significant crosswinds originating from the left side of the runway. This environmental factor caused the pilot to lose control of the SP-FLU, leading the plane to veer toward the right side of the runway.

After departing the paved surface, the aircraft traveled over a ravine and collided with uneven terrain before eventually coming to a stop. While the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss, all three people on board managed to exit the wreckage with only minor injuries.

Findings

Investigations into the incident noted that the aircraft was still being operated under its Polish registration, SP-FLU, despite that registration having been previously cancelled. At the time of the accident, the owner was actively working through the process of obtaining a Brazilian certificate of registration.

Probable cause

The aircraft veered off the runway due to the pilot losing control during landing while encountering left-side crosswinds.
