Engine failure following takeoff at Lovozero Airstrip

No fatalities • Lovozero, Russia • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft experienced engine power loss shortly after departing Lovozero Airstrip, resulting in a crash into a wooded area with no injuries reported.

What happened

During the initial climb phase following departure from Lovozero Airstrip, the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of engine power. At an altitude of approximately 15 to 20 metres, white smoke was observed emitting from the lower portion of the engine.

As a result of the power loss, the aircraft's altitude decreased, leading to a collision with an 8-metre-tall tree situated 191 metres beyond the runway threshold. The impact caused the aircraft to crash into a nearby wooded zone, approximately 58 metres past the tree.

Despite the impact and the destruction of the airframe, all 12 occupants managed to exit the wreckage without sustaining any injuries. The aircraft was subsequently determined to be a total loss due to the extent of the damage.

Findings

  • The primary factor in the accident was the loss of engine power during the climb phase.

Probable cause

The engine failed shortly after takeoff, causing the aircraft to lose altitude and strike trees.
