Aborted takeoff following crosswind excursion

No fatalities • Karagishev, Russia • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft experienced a significant deviation during its takeoff roll due to strong crosswinds, leading to an aborted takeoff after striking an embankment.

What happened

During the initial stages of a takeoff roll, the aircraft reached a distance of 200 metres from its starting position and attained a speed of 80 km/h. At this point, the aircraft was impacted by intense crosswinds, which caused the plane to veer approximately 30° from its intended path.

As the deviation occurred, the aircraft made contact with an earth mound. In response to the loss of directional control and the collision with the terrain, the pilot-in-command initiated an emergency abort of the takeoff procedure. The aircraft subsequently came to a complete stop following the impact. There were no fatalities or injuries reported during the incident.

Findings

  • The primary factor in the deviation was the presence of strong crosswinds during the acceleration phase.
  • The aircraft's path was interrupted by an encounter with an earth mound during the aborted takeoff attempt.

Probable cause

Strong crosswinds caused the aircraft to veer off the runway centerline and strike an embankment during the takeoff roll.
