Fatal aircraft crash near Novoternovskiy during survey mission

2 fatalities • Novoternovskiy, Russia • Flight

A survey aircraft crashed in a field near Novoternovskiy, resulting in the deaths of both crew members after the aircraft encountered heavy fog.

What happened

During an early morning aerial survey mission intended for firefighting support, an aircraft operated by the crew departed without a filed flight plan and without communicating with air traffic control. As the flight approached the Novoternovskiy area, the weather deteriorated significantly, with thick fog reducing horizontal visibility to only 10 meters.

In an effort to regain visual contact with the terrain, the pilot descended to an altitude of approximately 5 meters. While flying at this low level, the pilot identified an irrigation complex structure. In an attempt to maneuver away and prevent a collision, the pilot executed a sharp 45-degree left turn. During this maneuver, the aircraft struck the ground in a field and immediately caught fire.

Findings

  • The aircraft was not in an airworthy condition at the time of the mission.
  • The flight was conducted without a flight plan or contact with ATC.
  • Severe fog and extremely low visibility prevented the crew from maintaining safe separation from the ground.
  • The crash resulted in two fatalities and the total destruction of the aircraft.

Probable cause

The accident was caused by the crew operating an unairworthy aircraft in heavy fog without flight plan oversight, leading to a loss of control during a low-altitude maneuver.
