What happened
On 28 October 2001, a Reims Cessna F152, registration G-BFSB, was conducting a private flight at Tatenhill Airfield near Burton-on-Trent. The pilot was performing a check of the airfield lighting systems in preparation for an upcoming night revalidation flight.
During the approach to Runway 26, the aircraft's descent path dropped below the standard approach profile. Although the pilot attempted to correct the situation by increasing engine power, the aircraft made contact with the ground approximately 70 metres before the paved runway touchdown markers. Upon landing, the right wheel impacted a low earth ledge, causing it to separate from the undercarriage. The aircraft proceeded along the runway on its remaining wheels before veering right and coming to a stop just off the main runway surface. The pilot was able to exit the aircraft without any injuries.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form provided by the pilot. The inquiry focused on the flight path during the final approach and the physical circumstances of the touchdown. The aircraft sustained damage that was deemed beyond economic repair.
