What happened
On 30 October 2003, at approximately 0650Z, a Robinson R22 Beta II helicopter, registration ZS-RLC, was conducting a private flight at Virginia aerodrome (FAVG). The pilot was attempting to land at the Starlite helipad following a flight that departed from the same location.
As the aircraft approached along Runway 0 5, the pilot observed two helicopters positioned on the taxiway: a Puma helicopter preparing for takeoff and a stationary aircraft, registration ZS-REW. Seeking to reach the helipad, the pilot decided to perform an air taxi maneuver through the gap between the two parked helicopters, believing there was sufficient clearance to proceed. However, while executing a right-hand turn into the wind, the tail rotor blades of ZS-RLC made contact with one of the stationary main rotor blades of ZS-REW. The pilot reported hearing a rumbling noise upon impact but was able to complete the landing without further incident. There were no injuries and no fatalities reported.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the maneuvers performed during the approach to the helipad and the spatial awareness of the pilot. Investigators confirmed that the pilot held a valid private pilot's license with the appropriate type rating and had 413 total flying hours, including 207.2 hours on the type. Both the Robinson R22 Beta II and the parked ZS-REW were found to be in a serviceable condition at the time of the event. The meteorological conditions were noted as fine during the occurrence.
