What happened
On 3 March 2005, a Mooney M20R, registration ZS-TWC, was involved in an incident at Kimberley Aerodrome (FAKM) during a private flight. The pilot was performing circuit and landing practice when the event occurred. After successfully completing two circuits without incident, the pilot attempted a touch-and-go landing on Runway 02. During the final approach, the pilot failed to lower the landing gear, causing the aircraft to strike the runway surface.
The investigation
Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the approach and the mechanical state of the aircraft. The pilot reported that the aircraft was functioning normally and presented no technical issues prior to the landing attempt. Meteorological conditions at the time were favorable, with good visibility, no cloud cover, and light, variable winds. The investigation also confirmed that the pilot held a valid license and medical certificate, and that the aircraft's maintenance records, including the most recent Maintenance Period Inspection (MPI), were up to date and compliant with airworthiness directives.
Findings
- The primary cause of the incident was that the pilot failed to extend the landing gear during the final approach.
- The impact with the runway resulted in structural damage to the propeller and the lower belly of the aircraft.
- There were zero fatalities and zero injuries resulting from the incident.
