What happened
On 20 August 2021, a student pilot was conducting solo circuit training in a Cessna 172M, registration ZS-STAT, at Wonderboom Aerodrome (FAWB). Following two successful circuits on Runway 29, the pilot attempted a landing on the same runway. During the landing sequence, the aircraft experienced a bounce and subsequently struck the runway on its nose landing gear.
Despite the application of brakes, the pilot was unable to maintain the aircraft's path along the runway. The aircraft veered toward the left side of the runway before coming to a complete stop. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft, specifically affecting the firewall. The student pilot sustained no injuries during the event.
The investigation
The investigation reviewed air traffic control transcripts and local meteorological data. At the time of the incident, the wind was reported as light and variable, specifically from 090° at approximately 4 to 5 knots. ATC records indicate that the pilot was cleared for a touch-and-go landing on Runway 29.
Investigators examined the mechanics of the touchdown, noting that the aircraft's nose gear took the initial impact of the landing. The investigation also considered the flight conditions and the pilot's maneuvers leading up to the excursion.
