What happened
On the morning of 27 January 2023, a student pilot was preparing for an initial solo flight at Wonderboom Aerodrome (FAWB). Following a successful check flight with a flight instructor, the student pilot was cleared by Air Traffic Control (ATC) to taxi to the holding point for Runway 11. Upon reaching the intersection of Taxiway Bravo and Delta, the pilot observed two stationary aircraft, ZS-EAD and ZS-SCE, performing engine run-up checks.
Noting that the space behind the lead aircraft appeared insufficient and that her position was obstructing the intersection, the student pilot decided to taxi past the queue without seeking guidance or approval from ATC. While attempting to maneuver the Cessna 172M Skyhawk, registration ZS-SNS, the left wing tip struck the right-wing fairing of ZS-EAD. In an attempt to avoid taxiway lights, the pilot steered further left, causing the ZS-SNS to strike the wing of ZS-SCE and subsequently impact its rotating propeller. The impact severed the left wing tip of the ZS-SNS. There were 0 fatalities and no injuries to any parties involved.
The investigation
SACAA AIID examined the flight records, maintenance logs, and ATC communications. The investigation confirmed that the student pilot had 35 total flying hours, with 17 hours on the Cessna 172M Skyhawk. The investigation reviewed the movement of the aircraft on Taxiway Delta and the lack of communication with ground control during the maneuver. Maintenance records for ZS-SNS were found to be up to date, with the last 100-hour inspection completed earlier in the year.
Findings
- The student pilot failed to adhere to ATC instructions and established aerodrome procedures.
- The pilot made a misjudgment of the distance between the wing tip of ZS-SNS and the stationary aircraft.
- The pilot's lack of experience contributed to the inability to safely assess the clearance of the high-wing aircraft during the turn.
- The pilot did not request assistance or guidance from ATC when encountering the queue.
Safety action
- The training organization implemented a remedial plan for the student pilot, including briefings on ground taxiing, emergencies, and radio procedures.
- A safety recommendation was made to the management of Wonderboom Aerodrome to consider establishing a designated engine run-up area before the Runway 11 holding point to improve aircraft separation.
