What happened
On the morning of 24 November 2024, a Cessna 172P with registration N441AG was conducting an hour-building flight intended to progress the pilot toward a Commercial Pilot Licence. The flight originated from Wonderboom Aerodrome (FAWB) in Gauteng, traveling to Bram Fischer International Airport (FABL) in the Free State, with plans to return to the departure point.
After an uneventful leg to FABL, the aircraft departed for its return journey without any additional fuel being added. While flying near Rosslyn, approximately 7.5 nautical miles northwest of the destination, the pilot contacted the tower to request a priority landing due to low fuel levels. During the final approach to Runway 06, the engine ceased operation. The aircraft subsequently struck trees approximately 200 meters from the runway threshold. While the pilot and two passengers sustained no injuries, they were transported to a hospital for medical evaluation, and the aircraft suffered substantial damage.
The investigation
SACAA AIID examined the flight records, aircraft maintenance history, and environmental conditions. The investigation confirmed that the pilot held a valid Private Pilot Licence and a Class 2 medical certificate. The aircraft's Certificate of Airworthiness and Certificate of Release to Service were both valid, and no mechanical defects were noted in the maintenance logs prior to the flight. Meteorological conditions were found to be clear and were not a factor in the event.
Findings
- The pilot did not have sufficient fuel on-board to complete the flight and land safely at the destination.
- The engine failure occurred during the final approach phase of the landing sequence.
