What happened
On 21 August 2002, a CESSNA 210L, registered ZS-MWD, was involved in a takeoff accident at Rand Airport (FAGM). The aircraft, operated for private purposes, was departing from Runway 35 en route to Simbambeli Lodge near Hoedspruit. The flight was carrying a pilot and one passenger.
Shortly after the aircraft rotated, the pilot initiated the retraction of the landing gear. This action caused the aircraft to lose sufficient lift and settle back onto the runway surface. Following this touchdown, the aircraft skidded off the runway while the landing gear remained in the retracted position. The incident resulted in no injuries to the occupants, though the aircraft suffered damage to the propeller, the left-hand wing tip, the landing gear doors, and the lower fuselage skin.
The investigation
Investigators reviewed the circumstances surrounding the takeoff and the pilot's actions. The weather conditions at the time were reported as CAVOK, indicating clear visibility and fine weather. Records confirmed the pilot held a German private pilot license with a valid South African validation. The aircraft's maintenance history showed the most recent periodic inspection had been completed approximately 51 hours prior to the event. The investigation focused on the aerodynamic changes that occurred during the gear retraction sequence.
