What happened
On 20 May 2003, an Enstrom 280C helicopter, registration ZS-HRL, was conducting a private flight near Witbank aerodrome. The aircraft was carrying a pilot and one passenger, who was utilizing airborne tracking equipment. During the flight, the pilot observed a sudden drop in the Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) indication.
In response to this technical anomaly, the pilot initiated a precautionary landing in an open field located approximately 10 nautical miles southwest of Witbank aerodrome, near the Hartebeeslaagte farm. During the final approach, the helicopter's main rotor blades struck a wooden telephone pole positioned to the right of the aircraft. This impact caused the aircraft to lose control, leading to a secondary collision with the ground roughly 12 meters beyond the pole. There were no injuries to the occupants, though the aircraft suffered substantial damage.
The investigation
SACAA AIID investigators examined the sequence of events leading to the impact. The investigation established that the flight was interrupted by an erroneous CHT reading, which prompted the decision to land immediately. The inquiry focused on the approach path and the presence of obstacles in the intended landing area, specifically identifying the telephone lines and the wooden pole that the rotor blades intercepted.
