Engine Failure Leads to Forced Landing of Jabiru Aircraft in Mossel Bay

Casualties unknown • Runway 09, Mossel Bay aerodrome, ZA

A private flight in a Jabiru SK ended in a forced landing at Mossel Bay aerodrome after an engine failure during the initial climb.

What happened

On the morning of 14 October 2014, a Jabiru SK aircraft, registration ZU-BOK, was departing from Mossel Bay aerodrome (FAMO) for a private flight to Riversdale. The flight was operating under visual meteorological conditions with clear skies. Shortly after takeoff, while the aircraft was climbing at approximately 150 feet, the engine began running roughly before losing all power.

Recognizing the impending loss of altitude, the pilot immediately maneuvered the aircraft to perform a forced landing on the remaining portion of runway 01. During the landing sequence, the nose gear strut failed, causing the aircraft to skid roughly 70 meters along the asphalt. While the aircraft sustained damage to the propeller, engine cowling, and oil cooler, there were no injuries to the pilot or the passenger.

Probable cause

The engine stopped during the climb because the carburettor became disconnected from the intake manifold due to improper installation of exhaust components.
