What happened
While performing a scheduled cargo operation for DHL, an aircraft traveling from Helsinki-Malmi Airport toward Mariehamn experienced a catastrophic loss of power. During the approach phase at approximately 2,000 feet, both engines ceased functioning simultaneously. This sudden failure resulted in the crew losing control of the aircraft type over the water. The plane impacted the sea a few kilometers from the coast and subsequently sank. There were two fatalities involving the flight crew.
Findings
Investigations into the accident identified that the primary reason for the dual engine failure was fuel exhaustion. Several contributing factors were noted regarding the operational procedures of the flight. The investigation highlighted a lack of adequate flight preparation by the crew and a failure to adhere to the established pre-takeoff checklist. Additionally, it was determined that the crew did not properly monitor the fuel gauges during the flight.
