What happened
On October 3, 2021, at approximately 11:08 UTC, a Pilatus PC-12/47E, registered as YR-PDV, was involved in a fatal accident near Milan Linate Airport (LIML) in Italy. The aircraft, operated under private flight rules and flying under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), had departed from Milan Linate with a planned destination of Olbia-Costa Smeralda (LIEO).
Following the initial climb phase after takeoff, the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of altitude. The descent continued until the aircraft struck an office building. The impact caused a fire that resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft.
The investigation
The accident occurred in Italian airspace, and the investigation is being conducted by the Italian authorities (ANSV) in accordance with ICAO Annex 13 and EU Regulation No 996/2010. The SUST provided this notification regarding the Romanian-registered aircraft.
Findings
There were eight fatalities in total, consisting of the pilot and seven passengers. There were no injuries to third parties on the ground. The primary sequence of events involved a sudden loss of altitude immediately following the departure from the airport, leading to the collision with the structure.
