What happened
On June 8, 2014, at approximately 14:10 local time, a J3C-65/L-4 aircraft, registration HB-OWO, was performing a private VFR flight near Courtelary. During the takeoff phase, the aircraft failed to gain sufficient altitude. In an attempt to maneuver the aircraft toward the other side of the valley, the pilot initiated a turn. During this maneuver, the airspeed decreased significantly, leading to a loss of control. The aircraft subsequently struck a wheat field.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the flight sequence following the takeoff attempt. It was established that the aircraft's inability to climb prompted the pilot's decision to change course within the valley. The investigation confirmed that the aircraft sustained damage to its landing gear, right wing, and engine block due to the impact with the ground.
Findings
- The primary cause of the accident was a loss of airspeed during a turning maneuver following an unsuccessful climb.
- The aircraft was operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) for private purposes.
- The impact occurred at an altitude of approximately 730 meters.
- There was one occupant on board, the pilot, who remained uninjured.
