What happened
On April 10, 2015, at approximately 14:30 local time, a PA-18 Super Cub, registration HB-PPJ, was performing a VFR private flight at Lommis Aerodrome (LSZT). During the landing phase on runway 24, the aircraft experienced an abrupt deceleration. This sudden braking caused the aircraft to capsize.
The investigation
The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) conducted a summary investigation into the event. The inquiry focused on the configuration of the aircraft's landing gear at the moment of impact. The investigation established that the skis attached to the main landing gear were in the extended position during the landing roll.
Findings
way The primary cause of the accident was that the skis on the main landing gear were deployed during the landing. This configuration led to the abrupt braking and subsequent rollover of the aircraft. The incident resulted in one person seriously injured (the pilot), while a passenger remained uninjured. The aircraft sustained significant damage to its wings, vertical stabilizer, propeller, and skis.
