What happened
An aircraft traveling from Bogotá-El Dorado Airport was performing its approach to Carepa-Los Cedros Airport when the incident occurred. During the flight, the co-pilot was initially serving as the pilot-in-command. However, during the final approach phase, the captain assumed control of the aircraft and continued the descent.
As the aircraft descended, the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) triggered seven separate alarms. Despite these warnings, the captain did not take any corrective measures to address the situation. While the aircraft was on short final at an altitude of approximately 200 feet, one of the engines experienced a failure. Due to the crew's failure to adhere to established flight procedures following the engine loss, the aircraft entered a stall. The plane subsequently crashed roughly 100 meters before reaching runway 33. The accident resulted in five fatalities and two serious injuries among the occupants.
Findings
Investigations into the crash highlighted that the crew did not follow published operational procedures during the emergency. A primary contributing factor was the failure to execute corrective actions following the activation of GPWS alerts and the subsequent engine failure.
