Two aircraft involved in taxiing incident at Deanland Airfield

Casualties unknown • Deanland Airfield, Sussex, GB

A Tecnam P92-EM Echo microlight was blown onto its side by propeller wash from a Harvard IIB during taxiing at a fly-in event.

What happened

On 8 June 2013, during a fly-in event at Deanland Airfield in Sussex, a Tecnam P92-EM Echo microlight, registration G-CBDM, was taxiing for departure on Runway 06. While moving towards the runway, the pilot of the G-CBDM passed behind an AT-16 Harvard IIB, registration G-AZBN, which was performing propeller checks. Due to limited space on the taxiway, the pilot of the microlight attempted to maneuver forward into a gap, but the aircraft was struck by the propeller wash from the Harvard. This force caused the microlight to tip onto its left side, resulting in damage to the left wing tip and the landing gear. The pilot of the G-endM was uninjured.

The investigation

The investigation was based on pilot reports and eyewitness accounts. The pilot of the G-AZBN stated that he had consulted with event organisers regarding parking and pre-takeoff procedures due to the crowded nature of the airfield. The investigation established that the pilot of the Harvard had coordinated with Air Cadet members to use hand signals for engine start and power increase checks. Following the incident, the pilot of the G-CBDM approached the Harvard pilot to report the accident. The Harvard pilot subsequently shut down his engine and restarted it for departure without further issues.

Eyewitnesses noted that the ground area where the microlight was taxiing was sloped, which may have contributed to the aircraft's instability. Furthermore, it was observed that the marshalling assistance provided at the event was limited, as the individuals assisting were not formally trained marshals.

Probable cause

The accident was caused by the microlight being blown onto its side by the propeller wash from a larger aircraft while taxiing in a confined area.
