What happened
On August 14, 2015, at approximately 20:00 local time, a Beechcraft G-58, registration ZP-BJV, was performing a repositioning flight from Asunción, Paraguay, to Laguna del Sauce International Airport in Maldonado, Uruguay. The aircraft was carrying one pilot and six passengers.
During the landing phase, the aircraft drifted to the left, exiting the runway and entering the runway strip area. The aircraft traveled approximately 200 meters within the strip before returning to the runway surface. Following this, the pilot executed a 180-degree turn on the runway, which caused the aircraft to veer into the strip again, leaving tire marks on the right side of the pavement. A "follow me" vehicle subsequently guided the aircraft from the runway to its parking position.
All seven occupants evacuated the aircraft independently and sustained no injuries.
The investigation
The CIAIA investigation focused on the sequence of movements during the landing and taxi phases. A primary inspection of the Beechcraft G-58 revealed no significant structural damage to the airframe. However, the investigation confirmed that the incident caused damage to two runway edge lights located on the utilized runway.
Findings
- The aircraft experienced a runway excursion during the landing phase, deviating into the runway strip.
- A subsequent 180-degree turn on the runway resulted in a second excursion into the strip, leaving visible tracks on the right side of the runway.
- The incident resulted in damage to two runway beacons/lights.
- There was no fire involved in the event.
