Air Arabia's Saudi budget carrier granted air operator's certificate

Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation has granted an air operator's certificate to Air Arabia's new budget carrier in the kingdom. The airline will be based at King Fahd airport in Dammam.

GACA said the carrier met all regulatory and safety requirements, clearing the way for operations to start. It is expected to serve 57 international and 24 domestic destinations and carry around 10 million passengers a year by 2030, according to the regulator.

Air Arabia had indicated recently that the new carrier would begin operations in the third quarter of this year. Its initial route network from Dammam has not been disclosed.

GACA said the airline would strengthen competition, expand travel options, support economic development and improve links in the kingdom's eastern region.

Air Arabia Group formed a consortium with Nesma Group and Kun Investment. Last year the group secured the rights to establish and operate a new low-cost airline in Saudi Arabia.
