Airbus A350-1000ULR test flight sets distance record amid certification push
Airbus has flown a record-setting distance with an A350-1000ULR as it works to certify the ultra-long-range variant, a project that contrasts with Boeing's delayed 777X.
Airbus set a new world distance record for a commercial aircraft on a test flight of the A350-1000ULR, the ultra-long-haul version of its A350 widebody that it is working to certify. The flight covered 12,460 miles.
According to the manufacturer, the range comes from the A350 family's existing long-range capability, and the test offered a look at where the certification effort stands.
The episode also highlights the gap between Airbus and Boeing in the market for jets able to fly the longest routes, with Boeing's 777X programme facing delays.
