Five arrested near RAF Fairford over suspected bomb plot

Counter-terrorism officers in Britain are investigating whether Iran was involved in a suspected bomb plot directed at RAF Fairford, a US-operated airbase in Gloucestershire. Five men were arrested in a security operation near the site.

Gloucestershire Police said the force was called at about 00:45 BST on Sunday after reports of three suspicious vehicles heading towards the base. Armed officers stopped and detained the five men in the neighbouring village of Whelford, and a major incident was declared.

The men were first held on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, then re-arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act, according to police.

Army explosive ordnance disposal specialists were brought in to examine the three vehicles, described as trucks and vans, inside a 400-metre cordon. About 85 households were moved out as a precaution and residents were given shelter at a nearby leisure centre. Police said the situation remained contained.

Security around the base has been stepped up sharply, with armed officers, emergency vehicles and roadblocks along access routes. Aircraft spotters and local observers reported that the installation had been placed at Force Protection Condition Delta, the highest US military alert level, though the US Air Force did not publicly confirm the force-protection level in use.

The 501st Combat Support Wing said personnel, families and contractors remain protected by appropriate safeguards, adding that operational security rules prevent it from discussing specific measures. The wing described its posture as vigilant.
