Garmin extends SmartCharts digital charting feature to Canada and Mexico

Garmin has expanded its SmartCharts feature to more Garmin Pilot Premium subscribers, adding coverage for pilots flying in Canada and Mexico on the web and Apple mobile platforms.

SmartCharts, introduced in May of the previous year, give pilots digital charting information tailored to a selected aircraft type and a specific arrival, departure or approach transition fix. The tool is meant to speed up briefing and cut the amount of extraneous data pilots have to sift through before flying an instrument procedure.

Garmin said pilots in the newly covered regions can now view a Continuous Descent Final Approach path on the vertical profile display. Cold-temperature corrections for airports subject to cold-weather restrictions are also included, with the calculations shown directly within the charting interface.

The update adds a missed approach climb gradient table to approach charts and displays applicable climb gradient values on departure procedure charts, according to Garmin. The company said this information is meant to support safe, timely climb-outs during a missed approach.

SmartCharts stay bundled with a Garmin Pilot Premium subscription for pilots operating in the United States, Canada and Latin America. A separate Worldwide subscription covers pilots who operate across multiple regions. Garmin said the updates are live now on Garmin Pilot Web, with the mobile version to follow.
