Germany and UAE allow Emirates a fifth German destination
Germany and the UAE have agreed to permit a UAE national carrier to serve a fifth destination in Germany, with up to seven flights per week, while capping frequencies at existing airports. The move is widely expected to let Emirates add Berlin.
Germany and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to let a UAE national carrier serve a fifth destination in Germany. A joint statement after UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's visit to Germany announced the deal.
The extra flights are capped at seven per week, and the carrier may not fly between the fifth destination and third countries. Frequencies to the four existing German destinations stay at current levels.
Emirates is not named in the statements. The airline has long wanted to add Berlin to a network that already includes Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg.
The agreement does not specify Berlin, and the airline could in theory pick another German airport. German Transport Minister Steffen Bilger said the move strengthens Germany as an aviation location.
